The Wind Rises (2013) is Hayao Miyazaki's last anime movie he has now retired from Studio Ghibli, He has retired before but he stated this time for sure. The Wind Rises is a semi-biographical anime about Jirô Horikoshi the engineer that designed the Mitsubishi A6M Rei-sen Naval fighter know in the west as the "Zero". Jirô was too near sighted to become a pilot but so instead he decided to design beautiful airplanes he was inspired by the Italian aeronautical engineer Giovanni Battista Caproni. He wanted to design passenger airlines but the military dominated government of Imperial Japan before WWII made that dream impossible so he designed A6M. The story is one of tragic romance, and a gifted aeronautical engineer who designed a beautiful airplane that was used in war. This anime raised a huge stink in Japan as it is decidedly anti-war. It goes without saying that in Japan WWII is still a very touchy subject and The Wind Raises really ruffled some feathers. The Anime is visually beautiful in the animation style fans of Miyazaki love. The story is deep and as in so many of Miyazaki's anime's you become emotionally attached to one or more of the characters. For me it was the character Nahoko Satomi (voiced by Miori Takimoto) who was Jirô wife her story raised a lump in my throat. It is full of joy and sorrow, triumph and tragedy. If this is indeed Hayao Miyazaki's last anime he is going out in style.
