Thorens TD-124 "How To Buy ?"

Ditto... prefer the MKI from a aesthetic perspective.

The lines on a TD-124 MK1 remind me of a '55 Mercedes 300SL...

You won't necessarily need a new idler, they seem to hold up a lot better than usual idlers do. Mine is original from 1967, and the synthetic rubber is still pliable, and works well. Of course if someone left it parked in gear you will be out of luck. I did change the belt though.

Overhaul really isn't that daunting, it's mostly a matter of cleaning out old lubricant and replacing with new, and changing one belt. It's mostly scary because you're working on something expensive. If you know how to work on electrical and mechanical devices it's not a bad afternoon of fun to tune up a TD-124.

About the top platter, this would need to be packed separately for shipping, I could see improper packing going a number on a TD-124 in terms of shipping damage. Some people prefer the table without the top platter and use a thick mat. I tried it, but I thing the clutch mechanism is really one of the best aspects of using a 124.
