Karl Bohm / Mozart; Symphony No.39 in E flat major
1966 Deutsche Grammophon
19?? Deutsche Grammophon (reissue)

(somewhat stream-of-conciousness post)

Rachmaninoff - Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini
no idea of soloist/orchestra/conductor at the moment (it's on the radio, gasp)

This is one of my Desert Island pieces. It has everything: humor (especially the opening! and closing!), full orchestral colour and expression, nearly unparalleled dialogue between solo and ensemble, sensitivity, passion, fire, wit, and all built on a demonic and exceedingly simple tune. Perhaps a little over-popular and/or over-played, but for very good reason.

I don't think I would characterize this as textbook Rachmaninoff (perhaps the Piano Concerto #3? Symphony #2?), but as a stand-alone work of art, it's a masterpiece and shows the dimension of his inventiveness perhaps better than most other works. Eh?

OK, announcer just said Stephen Hough at piano and Andrew Litton conducting, I missed the band. Great performance and nice recording!

One of my favorite Rachmaninoff pieces - very nicely performed by Stephen Hough, with Andrew Litton conducting the Dallas Symphony - part of the Rachmaninoff Concerto cycle that Hough recorded on the Hyperion label. It's an excellent set!

I´m listening to Tchaikovsky´s 6th symphonie right now. I have, of course, never heard it before....

Sounds great so far :)

Edit: I just got to the around the 10 minute mark, all was quiet, and then, BAM!!! Scared the shit out of me!

This is really AWESOME music so far!

Edit 2: WOW, just WOW! This is easily one of my favorite Symphonies so far. Absolute musical perfektion from start to finish. It has everything that I love; it´s slow, fast, quiet and loud, has fantasic melodies throughout. Impresive!!

This is what I love about my new classical music passion. There is so much new (to me) music that is just so amazingly fantasic! I have heard a lot of classical that I don´t care for, or that is just "okay" IMHO, but then something like this comes along. Again, WOW!

Enjoy the ride! It only gets better from here!
