Two selections today:
Ralph McTell, Spiral Staircase, Transatlantic TRA 177. McTell is a real folkie, heavily influenced by black American blues singers - he took his professional name from Blind Willie McTell. The only song that is at all commercial is the famous 'Streets of London', which must have paid a lot of bills.
John and Beverley Martin, Road to Ruin, Warner Brother WS 1882, not very folky at all, more like honky-tonk folk with bongos and piano. A cross between Leon Russell and Nick Drake comes to mind. Well, it is a Witchseason production featuring such genuine folk-rock artists like Dave Pegg and Danny Thompson, so back in the UK folk section it goes.
