They are everywhere. The have a distinctive hard silver exterior that is easy to spot. I've three, (Armstrong, Ellington, and Hodges) that I've picked up over the years. If you're purchasing more than a few items and the store has an excess and depending on the store they might come down in price. One guy tried to tag me $15 for one when there was no price tag on it, till I pointed to the shelf with ~30 or 40 sets. I wouldn't expect to pay much more than a five spot.

They're not everywhere around here, sadly. Finding jazz and blues at prices like that doesn't happen too often.

On the brighter side of things(!) I spun Count Basie - Basie Plays Hefti this afternoon. Not vinyl, just a digital copy. Sounded great.

That's one I'd love to hear. The thought of Dave Brubeck and Anthony Braxton playing together makes my head feel like it should explode anytime now.

I swapped in a new phono preamp tonight and figured out what killed the sound coming from my turntable. Apparently something is really wrong with the NAD phono pre I've used the past 10 years. I inserted a Pro-jeckt Phono Box S and suddenly all the high frequency extension and air that was missing are back. Just as important is the fact that the Ortofon 2M Red cartridge that I was thinking of pulling out and taking a hammer to actually sounds like the press it's received all these years.

Before and after test LP: Chick Corea - Return To Forever
Now Playing : Kenny Drew, Neils-Henning Orsted Pederson - Duo 2 (Inner City pressing of a Steeplechase recording).

Nice !!! I had a similar experience. I recently went from a uTurn Audio Pluto preamp to Project Tube Box S and the difference was night and day. It's even better now that I put some better tubes in.

I would love to try the Tube Box S, but it's not in the budget at this time. For some time I've known something wasn't right, Checking the cartridge set up didn't help, so it was between the cartridge and the preamp as to the source of the problem. Now that I know the phono preamp was the source of the problem I can finally start to appreciate the cartridge on its own merits. It really helps to catch a sale at the right time.

The owner has all 28 for $100. I claim no association, just at the nexus. I briefly thought about offering $50, but then I have NO place for the sets.
