I'd believe it. He's one of those guys who really flies under the radar.
Oh man, Newborn is the friggen' business!
If one were to make an argument for the most underrated jazz pianist ever, he'd be right in the mix if you ask me. Of course he's been hyped as being way underrated for so long that you could argue that he isn't anymore, lol!
I think I've got close to twenty of his releases.
His demise was one of the reasons http://jazzfoundation.org/ got started.
Cool. Not sure if I knew that.
For those that haven't seen it, some live Phineas.
As one of the commenters says, "This is cooler than watching the space shuttle take off"!
Linda Ronstadt did a little show on Sinatra for XM/Sirus. She said Frank did his homework before every recording session. He wanted to get each song on first take to keep it fresh.
Never was a fan. Must be all the jukebox exposure in youth. Today I respect him for his talent.

I also recently bought a Newborn Jr. album, The Newborn Touch, and it's astounding, so I'm now watching out for more of his recordings. I also looked up some of his story, wondering why I hadn't heard much of him before. It's wrenching.
One of my favorite finds last year is an early (original) pressing of this in a $1.99 box. I've rarely listened to vocal jazz, but I really like that album.
Anyway, I'm currently listening to McCoy Tyner's Echoes of a Friend. I recently shared a photo of it, so I won't repeat share too early.
