  9. Tyrese - Alter Ego (Disc 2)

Watts, Los Angeles, California R&B veteran takes a break from crooning to spit a few rhymes as his rap alter ego "Black Ty." It's an overall decent effort.

  15. The blueprint for West Coast rap. Period. And I mean no disrepect in regard to the work of prior group members while in N.W.A. or eventual solo releases by Ice Cube, Eazy-E, or MC Ren. Prior to the release of this album, rap emerging from the Golden State got a lil' bit of shine, as the jazz-looped and boom bap sounds of the East Coast hip-hop still dominated the genre. This release swung the needle completely in the opposite direction. Snoop Dogg's debut the following year cemented the region's place in the Parthenon of rap. I clearly remember hoodies and timbs being thrown in the closet as fans starting "throwing W's" and directing their attention towards low-riders versus the well-engineered status mobiles manufactured in Europe. Excellent pick that was long over due in adding variety to rap's soundscape and letting the world know that urban life existed outside of Greater New York - and that's coming from a complete fiend of mid-80s to early 90s "Golden Era" hip-hop from the East Coast. The zeroes and ones that would comprise "Let Me Ride" are missing from my CD due to overplay. The laser simply stalls out...

  19. Rakim? Along with KRS-One at the time, he's simply the first "lyrical master" of hip-hop. Word play, topics, substance... Feel free to add more positive adjectives. The lyricism and sonics of hip-hop changed at large when he and Eric B. debuted in '87 ...along with Boogie Down Productions and Public Enemy during the same year. Yeah, I'll admit. I still bob my head 31 years later when "I Ain't No Joke" comes on.
