The instrument on the left is the Turkish Khamanche (predecessor to violin)
On the right,... The Tambur. Its a plucked lute family instrument. The neck is incredibly long and flexible. The musician would thrust the instrument forward and back, flexing the neck, and causing a "vibrato"-like effect (not sure if this is even correct title for the action). The neck would whip around, sometimes in a circular motion, creating a very interesting sound.

Recordings by Mike French, as archivist and friend of ensemble
Ambient Master:
DPA 4022 stereo pair, cardioid XY 90º ->
Grace Lunatec V3 45dB analog ->
Sound Devices 722 line-in -3db, 2448
Mics at center of balcony lip, extended outward on 3' extension (see pics)

Soundboard Master:
Allen-Heath console -> canare 25' -> Edirol R09 line-in level-9 2448
set two - pt.I is missing, as the Edirol R09 recorder quit recording just after a confirmation was made that it was recording. So, about 15 minutes of sbd feed is missing, and an attempt to replace that missing segment was made with the ambient source.

String bending old school.

@BlindBoyGrnt
Yep!
I did two of their gigs. The first one, I was sitting straight out in front of them in the audience. The next gig, I was set up to their right "in the wings". I could look down the long neck of the Tambour, and watch him flex the neck by whipping it around. The nut end of the neck was swinging about a 6" diameter when he was whipping it into a circular flex. It was pretty interesting to see.

Now this is my kind of thread. Lots of great things listed here. My current love is reggae and African music. Last thing I listened to this morning was Burning Spear's Dry and Heavy and Glen Brown's Boat to Progress.

Magna Carta, a Netherland's group who were pretty big in the 70's.

I liked the lyrics which were almost poetic-like and the background music that featured the words.

One of their best was "Seasons" which was based after Vivaldi's famous work wherein they cover the different seasons with a textured music/lyrics that paint detailed word pictures. The album is a sit down by yourself type of composition in which you get lost in the mix. In a way they are much like the Moody Blues in the presentation.

A record worth taking the time to appreciate. LIMO.
