I'm new here but did you ever consider Pat Methany the Steely Dan of jazz? Not trying to be critical since obviously everyone here thinks Steely Dan is great.

I'm not a fan of Steely Dan, being a contrarian. Metheny is a musician who has (IMHO) always done his best work when he is under a stronger musician's lead (Gary Burton, Charlie Haden for example, even Lyle Mays). But I forgive him of his self-indulgence because of his open disgust with Kenny G.
