Unusual vintage HK receiver. No pics, but anyone know it?

I was at a used furniture shop the other day and spied an older Harman Kardon receiver. The unusual part was that the radio dial was on the top instead of on the front. You certainly couldn't stack any other components on it! I think they were asking $40 for it. Worth picking up? Thanks.

Model 230 ?

Even though it was low end I'd pick up a 230e for $40. I love the 70s HK stuff though, it would be perfect for the bedroom.

That one is cool. I had what I believe was an earlier HK Model 230. It's HK given name was the "Nocturne". Analog dial on the front and all, it looked like a slightly smaller 330, with the one piece of chrome like stuff going around the face, and the black chassis.

Yes there was a "Nocturne" (the hk name for their early, blackout dial components) called the 230 (or maybe even two thirty).

There are 2 versions of the above 230e receiver. One with a balance control and a backlit dial face, and one with no balance control and no backlighting. I had the latter. Plus imho the 330c sounded much better. The 230e did not have that HK sound quality.

Yup, almost certainly the hk 230e...

but...

It's probably worth mentioning the other possibility -- it'd be nice to pick up one of these for forty smackers... ;-)

hk 230e manual is available from h/k via http://www.harmankardon.com/images/media/230E_OM_EN.pdf

You are correct, it is the low-end 230e.

I see my photo of the Citation Receiver that I posted years ago has gotten around.
It came out of the Citation Receiver brochure.

I haven't seen a 230 or Two Thirty, but I know they exist. Or maybe a 210.

The Three Thirty, the model that pre-dated the 330A, also has a black face with grey knobs. I believe this was referred to as Nocturne.

So, not sure about the "Nocturne" being just one model, if so which one, or if it referred to multiple models.
