USB DAC question?

What gets configured in the computer itself? I mean how do the music files get directed out the USB ports? Is it always there by default?

The operating system will see it as an audio device, audio is part of the USB spec. There may be device specific drivers and there are third party driver that can lower latency and jitter and use ASIO on XP

So on XP there is still the problem of getting bit perfect, even when using USB? How about vista / 7.

It's not a question of being bit perfect, it's a question of the quality of transmission.
Bypassing the mixer and using kernel mode drivers improve things a bit.
There are ASIO drivers for vista that should work on 7 though you may have to disable driver signing until native drivers appear.
