Bingeing on some Art Pepper this afternoon. Starting with sessions from 1956/7 on Pacific Jazz PJ60 'The Artistry Of Pepper' an early compilation with some heavy West Coast supporting players.
Followed by a 1960 session released in '63 while Art was incarcerated showing ironically he was moving toward the free style of Trane and Coleman on a set of standards. Quite taken by the pianist Dolo Coker. Contemporary S7607 (OJC repress)
Finishing up with a mid 70's comeback 'Living Legend' Contemporary S7633
Supported by a stellar rhythm section (Hampton Hawes, Charlie Haden, and Shelly Manne) Pepper demonstrates he hadn't lost his incredible tone on a set of originals, and a great 'Here's That Rainy Day'
