What’s the best top access tape deck?

I have a space in my stereo cabinet, formerly used for a turntable, in which I want to put a tape deck. It’s top access only.

I’ve got a Nakamichi 600 but it’s in my system one rack, so I don’t really want to take it out. I had a Tandberg TCD 310 thirty years ago and miss it. Any thoughts?

Could a Nak 700 be used lying down if the feet came off?

+1 on the A-450. Top notch player. Have not done any recording with it though. Love the look and the build quality is outstanding. Oh yeah. Easy to work on as well. Have two of em.

Better than a Tandberg or a Nak? It looks lovely though.

Which Tberg or which Nak? I'd say as good as the Nak 600. Others... not so much so but none of the Nak decks above the 600 are top loaders.

Well if you have enough room for the drawer to come out and for a mirror to be placed at 45 degrees so you can see the front of the machine I suppose you could use any deck you like.
