Dumpster save of a 2240b that is now singing quite well but when cleaning up and recapping the power amp boards noticed both heat sinks had these peculiar aluminum pieces attached with screws to the bottom area of front heat sink fins. They attach to nothing else, nothing from the chassis abuts this area, there are no components associated, and I know Marantz didn't spend money on widgets without a reason... right? :dunno:

DSC_2475.JPG Those are professional rack mounts. In a studio environment the equipment racks are 19" in width and those metal ears hold equipment into those racks with special rack mount screws. On a really heavy piece of gear (like a Marantz receiver) there would also be a rack mount tray as an extra support. Just remove them and toss 'em.

If ever selling, some people consider rack mounts a plus, even if they do not need it. So you might consider just keep them.

Doesn't look like rack mount ears to me, we are looking at the heatsinks here, sooo...
more likely something to give the heatsinks more support ?

I think they are to help prevent the chassis from bending in the rear foot area.

Yeah....I don't think they put the rack mounts on the heatsinks, inside the covers. What Tom said is the correct answer. AFAIK, Marantz didn't make any rack mountable 22xx receivers.

Thank you all. Yes I did leave them there, I was pretty sure they had a purpose, and being inside the case on the bottom of the heat sink fins near the chassis edge it would make sense this may be a prevention item for chassis bending. Thanks :)

Marantz from that era had pretty weak chassis. Often the foot mount flanges would bend and the whole unit would teeter. These screw spacers look like they may help issues like that.
