That's why this thread is such a great place to hang out. Any and all music is accepted, played on any and all equipment. The music rules the roost and everything else is incidental.

Thanks for answering for me. It is an intriguing question-which recordings would you take with you if placed on a deserted island?

Someone's playing future games. Gotta hunt that down. I know I've got it in a few formats. I just never get tired of it. Right now I've got Carly Simon's Playing Possum on. Hot cover. image.jpeg

Good question. It becomes especially difficult when asked which of the 8 recordings you would choose if you could only have one. I'll attempt an answer, just for the hell of it.

1 (and the one I'd keep over all others) Beethoven's 9th Symphony
    2 Rush - 2112
    3 Verdi - Requiem
    4 Strauss - Blue Danube
5 Pink Floyd - Division Bell
6 Mike Oldfield - Songs Of Distant Earth
7 Emerson Lake and Palmer - Karn Evil 9
    8 Yes - Awaken

Of course, tomorrow, my selections would probably be quite different, but that's today's snapshot.

Have to get the Professor to rig up some electricity on that desert island to be able to hear your 8 choices

You might not remember, NW, but some years ago you turned me onto Dream Theater. Just a little cassette with a side of covers on it. I don't recall the title, but I remember a blue oyster cult song, probably beat the reaper, was on it. Now I've got tapes and cd's galore by them and they've become one of my favs. Belated thanks.

Just to clarify-- I love vinyl, but I have thousands(?); well, many many hundreds of CD's. I'm not anti-CD. I was talking about (and commenting on another post) the difference between mastering/re-mastering for CD vs. vinyl. Those are factual statements. The physics of vinyl and CD's are different.
That is not to say that there aren't good CD's (you misunderstand me), or that all vinyl is equal (it's not). Quite the contrary. But digital, objectively, is "better" (subjective term, I know). That doesn't change the fact that many of us prefer analog. It just-- is.

There are far too many factors to decide which is really "better," even if all of us could agree on a standard for "better" (analog source vs. digital source, analog mix vs. digital mix, analog master vs. digital master; sampling rate, bit rate, dither/no dither, record speed, mixed and mastered properly for each medium, playback choices of the listener, etc., etc., etc.). Your ears determine what you like. And that is fine. I'm not preaching one over the other. And I'm not an audiophile, in the "gear head" sense. I've been involved with music professionally for over 30 years. I still remember the look on some friends' faces when they would come over for the first time and see my home stereo set-up (decidedly not audiophile).
The standard comment was "THIS is what you listen to music on?!?"

    >>>>Better to spend valuable time looking for good music.<<<<

On THAT, we can whole-heartedly agree!

Didn't they make a Victrola out of bamboo, for all of those crates of 78's "Lovey" just happened to bring along?

image.jpeg Well, Carly's stopped playing possum, which sounds much more interesting than it is. I just mean the record has been completed. Now in keeping with my professed eclectic nature, I'm off to something completely different. Some good old Fripp. In The Court Of The Crimson King.

Today my 8 desert island recordings would be:

    LONDON CALLING--The Clash
    SOMETHING ELSE--The Kinks
    REVOLVER--The Beatles
    PET SOUNDS--The Beach Boys
    ODESSEY & ORACLE--The Zombies
    MODERN COOL--Patricia Barber
    FREAK-OUT--Mothers of Invention
    MGM ALBUM--The Velvet Underground

These 8 recordings alone would make me a very happy man. Btw, I'd probably choose these same 8 tomorrow.
