Very sad news James
Ugh. Damn it.
I am not yet familiar with Husker Du, though it is tragic they lost Grant Hart. Their new album (all three discs) are presently on NPR's First Listen:
I will definitely give a listen once I am done with this current one (work provides lots of interruptions resulting in slow album listening).
Every day's a good day to hunt for music. I think I will cruise by my Goodwill and see what they got. They lowered their prices on cd and vinyl to 50, last time I was there.
It is a sad story. The makers of the documentary were very respectful. They interviewed one survivor who is in his 90's. Put a lump in my throat.
They are the Godfather's of 80s Alternative & Grunge. Grant was the drummer and co-singer. I was always more of a Bob Mould fan (guitar and the other singer), but Grant was a huge part of their sound and vision.
Husker Du is one of the greats IMO. I read the band's "biography", and it was quite interesting. Came away from it with a greater understanding and appreciation of not just the band but the industry and scene back in the day when it was still fringe music.
A couple things they discussed stuck with me and have colored my thoughts since:
3 guys in the band, all were required to write songs and any song you write you sang
They had a long history of playing their new material out at gigs before laying it down to tape. That way they could work out the wrinkles and settle on what worked and what they could achieve in a live setting
Not bad for a landmark double LP...
Thanks Grant, your music made a difference in my life and in that of many I know. The world is a richer place for it.
Oh ya, and it's gots to be loud!
Black Diamond / Stan Ridgway
Coming to a head
I am listening to the first disc of "Savage Young Du" and I like it.
First of The Last Calls - always loved that title.
Straight Up / Badfinger
Glad to hear you made it relatively unscathed. I was without power for 3 days with no generator (and yes I have your recommended generator on my list).
Now I'm doing some cleanup as we speak...
