This is my first Ben Webster record. My research told me that “Soulville” and “Meets the Oscar Peterson Trio” are two of his bests. I found a Verve reissue containing both records in NM condition. It is the Verve collection of these two greats. Ran them through the RCM this morning. I am always amazed at the great recording quality and studio work of these late 50’s records. Wow. This is a very nice reissue with expanded liner notes.
Musically the performance is excellent. Webster is breathy and powerful and yes - soulful. Ray Brown plays bass on all tracks. The Soulville record benefits from the added skills of Herb Ellis on guitar. Welcome to my collection Ben!!
