What was the first car you bought with your own money?

Oh, this will make me sick....

My first car ever, bought for $600 back in 1972 - 1973.. .was a 1969 Camaro RS Convertible. Had 50k miles, dents in most quarter panels... Loved that car.
Put in an Eight Track in the glove box (called 'em that then)... and later upgrade to a Pioneer Supertuner. Left the hole where the old AM radio was... so everyone thought it had been swiped already.. meanwhile the Supertuner remained.
Sold it in 1977 as I bought a Brand New 1977 Camaro.... sold the '69 convert for $900 and now itt had over 100k, but the body was fixed and it ran great. Had the Chevy 307 V8...
Then about a year later, I found out it was a collector car...

Today in mint condition worth $40,000 or more.... But I was young once and had to sell it to buy my next car....I was probably 22 at the time...

Sick... sure wish I could find one now; that I could afford...

:scratch2: Wish I had thought of that before a couple of thefts.

I've done the same thing. If you factor in the 35 years you would have had to store, maintain and do the work required to achieve "mint condition" it would have consumed a lot of the $40K you "might" have grossed.

:dunno: Hey, just trying to make you feel better!

'68 Camaro in '96 shorty after I saw the movie Dazed and Confused. Just had to have a muscle car after seein' that classic flick. Still have it and, God willing, always will. It's been out of commission for about five years now but I just dropped a 550 horse stroker in it and should have it back on the road this spring. Last time I drove it super unleaded was less than $2/gal. Refills are gonna' hurt this go round. :whip:

Mine was a '37 Chevy 2 door sedan. This was in 1968. Guy I bought it from restored old cars and this had been his latest completed project. Black with black interior, 3 speed on the floor, bucket seats (out of a corsair), hanging pedals instead of out of the floor board. Had a 6 cylinder when I bought it and I had my neighbor who owned a dragster and a race boat put a nice 283 in it for $100. I also put some L60's on the back. I don't know how many times I have regretted selling that car.

1985 Ford Thunderbird I bought it for $300 in 97. Not the turbo coupe but identical paint except the trim was chrome not black.

1994 Ford Escort

It ran smooth and would do curves like few cars do but its weak point were the suspension bushings.

The first car I ever bought was a white 1971 Detomaso Pantera (the first of three). It subsequently meet an untimely end when a tree and telephone pole hit it at 100mph. Luckily, no one was hurt.

In 1982, I found out for $600, a 1966 model, the last year with the bitchin' spear chrome trim that curved up at the back end of the doors - and it came with a spare engine, transmission & Laylock-Denourmville (sp?) overdrive.

Had the spare engine bored out & re-built ( I was allegedly saving $$ for college, having taken off after freshman year due to changing family finances - should have bought a freaking Toyota!), installed it myself and did a bunch of other learn-as you go repairs on that car.

2 months after the new engine, some..... person T-boned me trying to snag a parking spot across 2 lanes of traffic. Totaled :cry:

So.. bought a '67, swapped the engine (again - my folks were SO pleased to have a car rendering plant in their driveway and garage..) and drove it for two years - Wonderful car on the highway - not fast off the line, but once up to 75-85 mph, it would cruise all day in comfort and style, complete with OEM Recaro seats and he-man non-retractable harness / seat belts that held you in the correct & comfortable position.

So what if you had to de-ice the idiotic gas filler door that would freeze shut, buy ignition keys by the dozen, and the delight that is Lucas electrics - Many was the time that I would pull up somewhere & someone would do a walk around & ask "What year Ferrari is that?"

Such an interior!

Someday, when my spy novel series is optioned by Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Harrison Ford, I will buy a 1963-64 and restore it.

But will have to buy s SECOND one to drop a small-block Chevy V8. Them B-18 & B-20 Volvo 4-cyls are NICE and bullet proof and all, just so much you can do with a ca. 1930's tractor engine.

BTW the car in the WORLD with the most documented miles on it is a '66 P-1800 not far from me.

Irv Golden - My Hero! 3 million Miles, almost

I SIMPLY LOVE THIS CAR!!
