which dirty pot is usually the culprit?

I'm cleaning the pots on my marantz to get rid of distortion in the right channel. I dont want to clean them all if only one is usually to blame. Any ideas which pot it might be?

It's the one that made static when you turned/pushed/actuated it when it was on.
If you don't know, clean 'em all.

On the silver on silver models, don't forget to clean the interconnects. They are a lever type that disconnects with insertion of RCA cable.

I try and stay away from the Mexican brown.:smoke:
But really, you have it apart, just clean all of them and eliminate them as suspects.

maybe the ones that sit idle the most get oxidised........the balance control as opposed to the volume for instance?

Generally, the volume and balance controls cause worse problems than the tone controls.

However, switches tend to cause more problems than pots.

I would treat ALL switches and controls. Give extra attenton to the volume and balance controls and to the tape monitor and function-selector switches.
