Why are Watts not Watts?

Denon PMA 1060 class A amplifier....it seems to work perfectly fine until about 20 minutes when I hear a click and the sound will be off for a second and then come back on: is that the protection circuit? why does it do that? I think if I switch on the "direct" input it stops it from doing the "click". otherwise, the unit seems to be fine. is it just getting old? need new caps?
