Why I Rarely Re-Cap My Vintage Receivers

Kill it? Bury it? My, so much violence! Nothing ever changes. Back in the '80s I stopped reading hifi magazines because it seemed like all the articles were just re-dos of stuff they had published before. What we have today is a vastly more efficient process of doing the same thing faster!

The thread's only a dead horse if
  • You got nothing more to learn
  • You got nothing more to say
So why are you still here?

Do Loops waste CPU cycles and this place is slow enough as it is!!

I dunno why are any of us here in the "Grand Scheme" of things ??

Guess we are all in a Do Loop

It is more like a worldwide parallel processing of recap topics on audio forums, I guess.

Do not worry, if one needs to write something about recapping, there will always be topics up and running about this, on AK.

My guess is 99%+ of all CPU cycles are wasted and the bulk of 'net traffic is hit counters and junk emails, not to mention porn, so in the grand scheme of things we don't even exist.

So just because everyone else is doing it we should also ??

Well, I read through the whole thread and am no more enlightened than before. I recently bought a McIntosh MX122 that is a 10/10 cosmetically, and seemingly working perfectly. The original owner is a tech guy who kept it serviced from by cleaning and lubing, and aligning the tuner section, but said everything spec'd as good as new, so didn't change out any caps. Having lurked on here for years I was dubious about that, so called two of the Tuner Information Center recommended Mcintosh techs. Both said the same thing, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

On the other hand I sent my working MC225 back to Yves Bouvais a few years ago for a complete refurbishment. I was content with the sound before, but wanted the cosmetic upgrade. That said he replaced every cap and resistor in the amp with new components of the original value. I was flabbergasted at how much better the amp sounded, so I understand the sound we are used to, is maybe not the best it can be.

So the question remains, should I send my 70 vintage MX112 in for a recap just on general principal? About half of you guys say yes and half say no.

I think you should not recap it. Just because we need to keep this 50/50 High Jinks going.

Thanks guys, you're a big help. Trying to put a smiley face here.
Seriously and not being a smart ass because I was before when you asked.

I would ask this question in the Mac Forum.

Tuner/Preamps are more sensitive to recaps and honestly unless you know how to align that thing or the tech you bring it to beware and tread carefully.
