Why transistor "A" suffix

I think they meant Vce that is maximum collector to emitter voltage. There is a 10V difference. Not just this, other transistors are like that also. eg 2SC4886 and 4886A is 150V vs 180V.

Manufacturers will append a suffix (A, B, etc) on the part number to denote a change in specifications. If the new part has a higher spec than the old, it should be a drop-in replacement.

OK thanks fellas. So an increase in spec could potentially allow for better sound reproduction, or just make it tougher? Or both?

It often denotes the range of hFE (gain), so you need to read the datasheets to know the difference(s). If a 2SC1234Z has a gain of 500 and you replace it with a 2SC1234Y with a gain of 100, things will probably be different.
