i was just wondering what these would sound like?

would they be just crap? and would i be better just re foaming, or replacing with something like this.

there my technics from a previous thread.

i really like the way they sound even with the bad foam. the mid and highs are great. so if i could get the woofers going i would be set.

A woofer HAS to match the enclosure its going into for proper results. There are alot of things that determine whether any given woofer will work in a given enclosure. If the VC and cone are still in good shape, I say re-foam 'em! Also, if any of the foam has broken away, you'll have an air-leak and in effect have unloaded the box. IE: You are losing bass and risking damage to the VC.

I'd follow the advice in the other thread and refoam them. Get the MAT surrounds and use Weld Bond white glue. It will run you under $10.00.

Spending $100.00 on Rat Shack woofers just doesn't make sense to me. You don't even know how the specs match up. Besides, for $100.00 there's lots of speakers to be had that should best those Technics on Ebay. Like EPI 100s, Boston Acoustics A-60s or A-70s, Dynaco A-25s, Small Advents or maybe a rough set of Large Advents, etc.

And if you go scrounging, Lord knows what you'll find. I've picked up dozens of speakers over the past 4-5 years and only paid more than $100 for 4 sets; JBL L300s, Klipsch La Scalas, Magneplan SMGa's and Altec Lansing Santanas.

Don't ask what I've paid $10 or less for; you'll be looking for tall objects to leap off of!

the thing is with MAT they say $25 minimum, and im in canada so i dont know how the whole shipping thing would work with MAT.

i think i will go through newfoam. everything i need for $35 canadian shipped.

this week i ll have to do that.

Without hearing you can't say, but I gotta tell you I once did just that, bought a pair RS 10" drivers without much thought or plan, put them into my garage sale speakers and they sounded absolutely marvelous - I still think about them now and then. So, just goes to show you can't always tell without trying.

alternatively...

... you can buy the complete refoam kit from partsexpress. You do pay a premium relative to MAT's piecemeal approach, but everything you need's in the partsexpress kit for ca. $30 USD.

The only tricky part IME is maintaining correct voice coil alignment. There is a pretty good photo-tutorial on refoaming at Steve Deckert's site. Try this link: http://www.decware.com/surround.htm
