WTH is this stuff?

Just received my MB-1 today and the tray has some greyish coating on it.
At first I thought it was from being in a smoker's environment, but when I scraped at it with my fingernail it came off and looked black. (kind of soft)

Did Nak use a coating on their tray? I don't see any on the MB-3 I have and I wonder if this is something they use as an optical enhancement for the higher end units.

Maybe just deteriorating plastic, IDK.

I wouldn't put a CD into it, until I resolved the issue. Is it on the bearing surface of the tray, or just the exterior? If it is on the 'dish', can you clean it off?

How thick's the coating? My first thought is some sort of damping material to kill off vibrations. I may be wrong, but I have heard of it on some machines.

That's it Tom...
I took the covers off both units.
Didn't have good light when first set in rack, therefore, couldn't determine what it was when opened as it appeared a bit patchy and some was building up and looked like grime.\
Looks entirely different in pic with flash.

All the trays for the discs are coated including the main one in the MB-1; not so in the MB-3.

I took pics:
