Hi All
Question for any Yamaha owners/experts. How exactly do you set up the loudness on the Yamaha? Played with it and it sounds nice, but would like to have a better idea of how it all works!
Thanks
Erik
Our ears are less sensitive to low frequency sound
at lower volume levels. So the loudness contour is
used to bring those sounds up. Most manufacturers
supply a single push button or toggle switch to
accomplish this. When you get to a higher volume level
you no longer need as much boost to accomplish the
same goal. So Yamaha thought it would be nice make
their loudness control variable so you could set the
amount of boost where you want versus having it
set at a fixed amount. The bottom line here is that
you probably will need less loudness as your volume
level goes up at the same bass settings.
The proper way to set the variable loudness on the Yamaha gear is to set everything flat and turn the volume control up until it's as loud as you will ever want to listen to it in your normal listening location. Now turn it down by using the loudness control as a volume control. Voila! You have the correct loudness compensation over a 20 decibel range simply by leaving the volume knob in place and using the small loudness control to simultaneously change gain and Fletcher-Munsen hearing curves.
