Yamaha GF1... now's your chance!

Hi All!

I'm really sorry to have left everyone hanging. It wasn't intentional at all.

After dreaming about the GF-1 for several years (I'm a very happy multi-year owner of one pair each of NS-1000X, NS-1000XW, and beloved NS-2000), I was finally almost within arm's reach of one of possibly the last two known pairs of GF-1. What happened didn't make me very happy. On my way to Nagoya, I was called-in for an "urgent matter" at work, and had to turn around upon arrival. On return to my hometown, what was claimed to be so "urgent" turned out not to be at all. I've since spent the past few days sorting that out, which is why I haven't been back in here till now.

In any event, it would not have been possible for me to buy the GF-1 this time for several reasons, one of which is that there was already a substantial list of people on "hold" for it within hours of the posting - the first few were within minutes, whereas I didn't see it on the site until the next day.

I did manage to get some detailed info about the unit directly from the shop, but feel posting any of that should probably better wait until the unit has been sold. Nothing negative at all, just some interesting history.

My next chance to try to hear (and feel, maybe even lick...:O ) them will be Sunday if they haven't been packed for shipping by then.

I'll let you all know whatever happens.

Update:
Sunday here. I had planned my weekend around going back today for a listen, but was told our GF-1 was returned to the warehouse yesterday, and is being prepared for shipping to Germany today.

Oh well. Maybe I'm better off never having heard it. That way I can console myself by imagining it sounded terrible.

Sorry that you didn't get a chance to hear the GF-1's.

In my experience buying vintage gear from Japan, a buyer needs to have a contact on the inside in order to have a chance to buy gear that is in short supply.

You certainly have a nice collection of Yamaha speakers!

If I was going to spend megabucks for a pair of speakers from Japan, I would purchase a pair at Kenrick Sound

They specialize in complete re-builds of vintage JBL, Yamaha, Altec and other speakers.
The web site has multiple videos of speaker construction and music demos.
There is also a great video of a team of piano movers nimbly lifting a Paragon into a second floor flat with a small crane

Yes, mjalazard, I've been to their display store in Tokyo and gaped over their beautiful work. I've been considering handing over my NS-2000s for them to do their magic on. Pretty pricy though...

Youtube has literally hundreds of vids of their rebuilds. Total audio porn... :O

They look really nice.

In a way we are lucky here at AK, due the the acceptance of vintage gear at this site plus the fact that we are well-known for that acceptance and appreciative of even a slight insight into the great vintage rarities, we get to see postings on quite a few different rare excellent components which almost never get a mention anywhere else.

The broad acceptance here of all things excellent no matter which era they hale from, bears fruit. :thmbsp:

Anyone go for the pair of GF-1's that showed up this morning on hifido for 33k? Already says "Hold". Do they levitate when current is applied? Has anyone here heard a pair?
