Found these on ebay for a couple hundred. They were beat badly. But all drivers work and tested perfect when pulled. Using raw wood unbacked quilted makore and hide glue with hammer veneering. I cleaned the beryllium domes with mothers mag polish and a cotton ball. Screens were straightened and made perfect again. Woofers will be re blackened and i am deleting the grills permanently. They will replace my last build 1000's and get all new crossovers built active in an external matching box.

IIRC, it's a way to "preview" what the wood will look like after finishing.
Water would give the same effect, but would raise the grain.
The alcohol dries quickly without any harm to the surface.
Others might use mineral spirits, but might be a problem if using a water based finish.

I remember hearing a pair of those demonstrated with high end gear when they were new.
Very nice!! Good luck with the restoration. Keep us posted.
