Yamaha T-85 modding

Has anyone had a T-85 modded for improved DX ability? Does this detract from sonics and from sensitivity?

thanks

Hey Mike

I don't know what narrower and wide filters come standard in the T-85 but you might want to look into a combination of narrower ones. You could probably solder three pin sockets in all the filter locations so that you could plug in different filters until you found something that worked for you. Someone on AK might be a source of matched filters. Murata seems to be the preferred brand for new filters. One of the best things you can do for DXing is invest in a high quality FM antenna. Just do a search of this site or at the yahoo groups FMTuners site. good luck.

You could put a filter add-on board too, I don't know just how much more selective you need. Filters shouldn't effect overall sensitivity, just more selective.

From the yahoo group site

This is what a member named tunerinfo had to say about modding the T-85.

I forgot to mention, the Yamaha T-85 is a real PIA because when you
change the filters, it messes up other things, like the IF offset and
the "CSL" lock/muting circuit. In order to cure the side effects,
which I can tell you how to do, you have to put up with some
ergonomic inconveniences - so I wouldn't recommend a T-85 mod for
anyone but a hardcore DXer. I use my 600T for listening and modified
T-9090 as my primary DXing tuner (I can put 20 DX frequencies on the
presets and zip around from there very quickly by .2's), with the T-
85 supplementing the T-9090 only when its .01 fine tuning is
necessary to eliminate splatter. The modified T-85, in effect,
requires two button pushes for each non-preset frequency change,
which is a pain.
