Yet Another CD Player Question

I have read here and elsewhere about "Older CD Players" not being in the league with newer decks, at about what year did the improvements become noticable?

Have A/B at home my old marantz 63se (1996)

vintage with latest Rega Apollo. Apollo is better
but difference are subtle. Slighly deeper bass, highs are a bit crisper. I only wish the 63se would go south, would not feel so bad about $1000 price of the Apollo.
on fence I really do not listen much to my cd collection as I have heard them over & over again.

Jitter issues are a bigger deal for "video" so that vertical lines do not appear wavy to the eye. This means very low cumulative jitter (jitter over time or low frequency jitter) that the ear is sensitive too. I think a lot this co-incided with the introduction of Toshib'a SD-9200(Nov 2002 @25 lbs)...the rest has been technology filter down over time.
