Rocky Road ice cream was named after an accident. The ice cream delivery truck was travelling down a dirt road when it hit a pothole, causing the back door to swing open and several ice cream containers rolled out. The driver, not wanting to get in trouble, scooped up the spilled ice cream and finished his deliveries.

A customer ordered some of the damaged ice cream and found gravel and dirt mixed in with his Chocolate Mocha. He sarcastically said, "They should name this ice cream Rocky Road, because that's what it tastes like. The name stuck but other ingredients replaced the dirt and gravel in the recipe.
