I think that is it, really isn't it. For all the exotic nature and $$$$. Top Gear still got a Mitsubishi Evolution around their track as fast as a Lambourghini. People mock American cars as having outdated technology, such as leaf springs in the Corvette, or solid rear axles, or pushrods. But if it works, it works. That Corvette is as fast as anybody could ever need unless they are on a track. What America does and does better than anybody else is put things in reach of the common man. I'll never afford a Ferrari, but maybe one day I can afford a new Corvette or Viper. Maybe the interior isn't as nice and it doesn't have that wow factor, but it's not really much slower and it still looks and sounds like a beast. America makes fast cars obtainable. I got my 2015 Mustang for the price of a 4 cylinder Camry. Very few countries in the world can make a RWD car with 300hp so cheap to the average Joe. Maybe a Porsche 911 is faster than my car, but it wasn't a choice between a 911 and my Mustang. It was a choice between my Mustang and some godawful econobox.
I have to agree, You don't need the latest and greatest technology to go fast. I bought a new Mustang GT in 1985 and when it had just over 500 miles a new 328 Ferrari pulled up to a light next to me, It was a divided highway with no cars ahead of us so when he pulled away from the light a little faster than normal, so did I. when we were over 110 I was still right at his front bumper and he backed off. At the next light he asked what I had done to it I told him nothing (I did do some carb work but that was it), I remember the smile leaving his face when I told him it was only $10,000 too.
