Thought occurs to me I might be shooting self in the foot here.
Reel to reel is a horrible format! Don't invest in r2r & don't buy Maxell!
Maxell tapes are b-a-a-d! Don't buy them at auction sites!
Kidding aside tho...
Maybe it's bias setting, but XL-I always sounded best on a 909. XL-II came off too brassy. UD fine for 3.75 speed.
Since Maxell hard to find now (& pricey)-- BASF, Scotch, maybe Ampex 641 or better.
Cass: any of the better ones-- Maxell, Sony, TDK...
