Zener Diode Replacement

hi,

I need to replace a shorted UZ-15BL Zener Diode.

I have experience with replacing these diodes. Is it ok to just another 15v Zener Diode - or do I need to match over specs as well?

The only local store in my small town that sells components has a 14744 1 Zener Diode.

Both diodes are 15v, but I can see that the replacement I'm considering has a "total power dissipation" of 1w - while the original Diode has a total power dissipation of 500mw.

Yep - you currently have a 15V zener rated at 500mW.

Going up to 1W will be fine - the voltage is the essential part.

Ah ok - so that figure is just a max handling? Like the voltage rating on a capacitor.
Not exactly. Bigger Zeners need higher bias current to achieve similar dynamic impedance. This might not matter in some applications, so you have to decide if performance is a critical issue in each case.
