Zenith tube radio

Picked it up at Goodwill, works fine. I'm wondering if I can use it to drive a fullrange 12" Goodman speaker and how well will it do?

the current speaker is a little 3-4 incher and the speaker wires seem to be single strand , bare copper. It looks like they may be touching each other and parts of the chassis??

Tubes include a 12be6, 12ba6, 12av6, 505c and a 35w4.

chassis is 5LO2

That radio is a typical "All American 5ive" hot chassis set. directly connected to the powerline with no isolation. Though the speaker secondary on the output transformer *may* offer enough isolation to make it reasonably safe to drive an external speaker. Be sure that there is no connections of the speaker wires to the chassis.

The frequency response of an AA5 set is something like 50 Hz to 5KHz. There is also likely a fair amount of 60Hz ripple hum that will be heard when using a hi-fi speaker. The filter caps in AA5s sometimes need replacing. Any wax caps in such radios should all be replaced, as all have leakage by now.

See my web site on AA5 tube radios
