Acquired some kg4's today. Alright shape. Want to clean up the wood though. Any suggestions? Oiled Walnut.

The dust covers on the passive are pushed in, not too worried about it. Any help? Ill post up pics soon.

Green grill instead of black, kinda bummed but its different than what I am used to so it works.

Congrats, clean them up (I use 0000 steel wool and a little dark stain/walnut old english furniture polish) if they are in decent shape and just need a good cleaning. Replace the grill cloth.

If the cabs are in bad shape, someone will chime in shortly, and point you in the right direction.

Replace the stock diaphragms with some Bob Crite's titanium diaphragms, and enjoy the :music:
 
Any suggestions as to replacing the grill. Was green even offered as a grille color option or am I seeing the end result of really bad fading? Could I just dye it? Ill try to post pics later. These things sound sweet. Tightest bass response I've ever heard.

I don't recall any grills being offered in green. I have had a pair of Kg4's since 1986 and still use them in the basement on a 2 channel setup.

One observation from your picture... I notice that you have them stuffed in the corner. From experience, I would move them about 12-16 inches from the back wall, (this helps the bass response even more with the passive radiator in the back) and if room allows get the sides away from the wall. The horn tweeter does not like to be that close and you may experience some sound reflection issues. Also, if you can get them elevated about 10 inches off the ground they will sound even more "open" and dynamic than the original floor placement. Mine too have the risers on the bottom, but it's not high enough for my taste.

Also, use a good amp, they are efficient but do soak up power quickly at high levels and will run some amps hot.

Just my 2 cents from owning these and having them in many different room configurations.
 
I'd just dye them (not spray-paint!). The grill frame is plastic, and should stand up to a little soaking. Do make sure the frame is plastic on yours however. I'd try and not get the cloth too hot or too wet; don't want to find out it goes limp after a hot soak or that the glue lets go...

Dust covers getting pushed in is common. Maybe if you are careful, you can use a vacuum cleaner, use the narrow attachment and use it to try and pop it out. I am told that the little cloth dust covers on the front woofers get soft after a while, but also don't effect performance. Good air sealing is important in this particular speaker.

I can attest - these are less efficient than Heresy II - My little power meter flicks higher on bass notes and pulses. And you will HAVE TO pull them out from the wall to get that low bass...but they are very good!

In the photo, the wood looks pretty darn good. I would take it easy and use a simple wood cleaner, and perhaps follow with Howard's Feed n' Wax. The oil/wax mix evens out little scratches. It is far too easy to go overboard...

that is stock...I have a pair of Walnut Oiled Quartets and the grills appear almost an olive drab...I bought brand new kg2s in 1989 and they also had this grill color...I believe they called them brown but they do appear almost green...

I use some lemon oil over the wood and they shine up very nice. Feed 'n Wax should be nice as well. My 2 year old pushed in the dust cover but, upon playback at a loud level, it popped out on its own. As for the fading, just take the dustcovers off, the speakers look MUCH sexier without them. Also, they're held on by magnets, and mine would buzz/rattle at louder levels (nothing ear-shattering). I'm running mine with a 75W receiver and they sound very sweet. Enjoy these.
 
Any chance anyone knows where i can purchase the same material in a different color for the grills?
 
I've had two pair of the Kg4s over the years. I sold one, regrettably, but still have and won't sell the other. I purchased the second pair unaware there were different grille colors available. The second pair was brown, so I ordered a second pair of black cover. I'm not sure what color the pair I sold had.

I have a virtually unused pair. I may post them in the used gear forum.

damn...wish i had a dog. Thats an awesome find. Can't believe what some people will throw out sometimes. Terrifying.
