SF Elipsa with MC275?

Will the Elipsa be too much for the MC275 to handle? Maybe 2 MC275 in Mono?

The local SF dealer will be doing a side by side demo of the Cremona M, Elipsa and Amati Homage in the next two weeks for me but he will be using ARC amps.

Any word on Elipsa/MC275 synergy would be appreciated.

Thanks

Nick,

Hard to say--I am running mine with MC402s, and it is loafing at loud volumes. Music peaking [not steady state] at 40 watts is quite loud in our large room.

My experience is with solid state amps, so I don't know what kind of headroom and woofer diaphragm control MC275 has. With the headroom and conservatism Mc designs with, it may be fine. Good luck with your decision. I hope this helps.

It's easy to find out

Tubes sound great with the SF line. At 91dB sensitivity you may be on the cusp of one or two 275's. It will depend on listening level preference, and room size. I suggest you demo one and if you like what you hear, buy it and then (IMO) change out the stock tubes as soon as practical -- for reliability and better sound  Then if you want more or tighter bass control, or you just need more volume, buy another one :D

The general concensus here from those who own two 275's is that the actual difference in sonics between one and two is negligable. And remember, the rated outputs are higher now. So a 275 running in mono puts out roughly 180 watts!

Should I worry about the impedance curve of the SF's? Read somewhere that they are not easy to drive regardless of the amp's power

I don't see why. I haven't seen any SF impedance curves, but they couldn't possibly be scarier than the one for my MartinLogan electrostats which dip to 1.0 ohm at 15KHz!

I heard the Cremona (not the new M) with a MC2102, C2200 and MCD201. It sounded much better than with the other solid state monobloc amplifier he had (and they costed more than the MC2102). Mac tubes is a great choice if you want to have the emotion of the music. If you want fatiguing "impression of detail", you might want something else (but then you wouldn't be looking at SF to begin with!). I would have thought that the Cremona had nothing to offer if I would only have heard it with the other amp.

And I will be very happy to hear your impressions about those three SF side to side. I heard the Elipsa, but not at the same time and place as the Cremona. I wonder how they all compare with the same electronics.
