Interesting. The laser block I have (directly from Yamaha parts) states:

Yamaha Genuine Parts
Laser Pick-up
HG-1 CDM555
1 PC E114
VE720301
Made in Japan

The packing list states:
1703
VE720301
Laser Pick-up CDX1110U

Am wondering if this cross-references to the NX602610 part you are listing?

Also, I was quoted a price of $79 and when it actually arrived it was $119. Took eight (8) weeks. Talk about inflation.

Still, I bought this a couple o' years ago from B-2, so what does this all mean.

Is the laser NLA??

I sure hope not.

The problem is Yamaha seems to have their own laser and nobody seems to use the same kind which makes it harder to find used equipment that shared the same part.

New laser is definitely NLA.

I hear some people tweak a little life out of them but turnignn some pots on the laser, but this is for the Sony KSS-151A type of lasers. This may totally kill so do only for last resort.

I agree with you that this is a great stock cd player compared to my Denons and Nakamichi and CAL. However, when modded, my simpler/cheaper Denon DCD-1520 sounds ALOT better.

If you really like this one, start looking on Ebay. You see one of these a couple of times a year. I managed to buy two of them during the last 2 years.

Well, thanks for the info, if a bit glum.

I paid handsomely for this. Argh.

I'm not sweating it tho. Got a pair of Technics, SL-PS700, and SL-PS770D.

The SL-PS700 hates cdr's, and is worn, but runs in Class AA. What does THAT mean?? Sounds great to my ears.

I have a new laser Yamaha said will work in the 1120. Not sure if it will work in a 1110. I paid more then $119

Bough the CDX-1110 and 1120 list the TAOHS-HGI laser as the org. So it might just work (I think the VE720301 and NX602610 numbers are ref. numbers from the service manuals).

Nacon; usually all Yamaha CDX-9xx models are really nice, often they share most of the parts with there 1xxx brothers. Only things like shielding, power supply and a few tweaks separate them from the bigger ones. In the case of the CDX-900 it must be a bit more since the difference is 6,5kg vs. 14kg of the CDX-1100, but still I would say - yes the CDX-900 is worth to own and it do share DAC and laser with the bigger brothers (including the CDX-5000, the CDX-10000 has a slightly different filter chip but else the same).

NOTE! I better write this before any gets something in the wrong thought :) Remember that most of the magic regarding CD-P/DACs are done in the analogue part and here you will properly find quite a difference between the CDX-900 and the CDX-5000.

NB. Denon DCD-1500 mk1 runs the KSS123A laser, but enough of this Denon stuff :D

The 920 and the 1120 look nothing a like on the inside. Different transport and power supplies but I think the DAC is the same. Sound wise they were both good.

The DAC is the same, but where the 920 use 2xPCM58P + the YM3414 filter, the 1120 use 4xPCM58P.

The transport is as you say different, there must be some reason for the $500 extra cost :)

Thanks for your advices !:thmbsp:

Gentlemen: Ahmmm

THe TAOHS-HGI laser appears to be readily available. I have a link to a supplier in UK that lists it as 7-14 day delivery. But I don't know the rules regarding listing links for suppliers...I know auction links are not allowed. It is listed at 119 GBP which seems higher than the price being discussed.

A few months ago I tried to buy a TAOHS-HGI on a UK site (Charles Hyde & Son Ltd) but since I don't live in an EU country I wasn't able to order one. If you can get them let us know.

Argh. Ain't it like yamaha to do this to me.

So, isn't there anything I can do for my beloved CDX-1100U???

Thats the site I was refering to. I have contacted them to see if they will ship to Canada. If so we'll see if we can't work out some way of relaying them to whomever requires one. (sometimes they Brits will Ship to Canada but not the US, something I've never been able to fathom, must be a Commonwealth thing :dunno: )

I have a friend in the UK that may be able to do this. But do the math. It may be cheaper to buy a working unit for around $300. Their tax VAT is really high like 20% or so. Plus shipping. By then, it will be over $200. Then, you have to replace it. I did on my Denon and it is NOT easy.

 Nope

Just got a response from Jo at Charles Hyde. "Unfortunately we do not ship to Canada as we have no feasible means of getting the goods to you. Sorry we are not able to help you this time."

He didn't say they were out of stock, only he/she had no way to ship :scratch2:

onwardjames fear not I think I have found a substitute laser unit for the CDX-1100. But can you do the repair youself?

Mark B: com'on EU usaly isn't a problem ;-)

wsjoe what is the difference between the KSS150A and 210A? They bough seem to work in the same Yamaha models.

Expensive yes, but a new laser will last a long time. It's well worth the cost for giving new life to one of the TOTL Yamaha CD players.

A substitute laser for the CDX-1100 would be invaluable. I don't have anything against the EU, just wish they'd sell to us "outsiders". :D

Mark B that wasn't what I meant; if you are an outsider you go to an insider, hint hint say no more say no more :smoke:

Afraid not. Is it ultra-difficult?? I can have Nakdoc do it, although I'm sure it'd be even more than I planned. Thank you for your tireless work on all things yamaha, T-R-M. It is appreciated. What is it, and what's it gonna cost me??

Of course this may not be the problem.....:scratch2:
