I bought some rear window defrost repair paint to fix my emits. I would like to just use tape to mask off the lines and paint the stuff on there, but im worried ill rip the voice coils off when i pull the tape. Does anyone around here have experience with this type of repair? whats teh best method of redrawing burned runs?

I have done that repair, and you need a keen eye (with a magnifying glass) and a steady hand. I too was afraid that tape would rip the voice coil off the kaptan, so I just did the repair using a very fine brush and did my best to keep the repair on the broken track only. It can be done.

Good Luck!

There is a product called Liquid Mask. It is painted on, carefully masking the area you do not want to put the liquid electric conductor. It dries thin and can be left on or gently rubbed off.

I haven't seen how delicate the EMIT is, but blue painters tape is made to come off, or a nice acid free artists tape that is made to come off of paper without lifting any away.

i need to repair 3 strands, all in the same spot. so i would need to put 2 pieces of tape down, paint the area, then remove the tape and do it over for each one. ill probably try the blue tape.

Get the 3M brand blue tape. Not all blue tape is the same. I've got some off brand stuff that is almost as sticky as duct tape. I use the stuff regularly at work. 3M stuff is a little more $$ but well worth it for this application.

Cheers,

Bob

the blue 3m tape ripped off the strands :(

A friend of mine uses the silver contact pen sold by Parts Express and then follows up with three coats of clear fingernail polish. Can you stick the strands back down with fn polish?

at this point i need a roll of sticky back metal like they used, a few loops got ripped off in aggervation. every time you touch one it crumbled a lil further up, or just peeled/split.
the first one i spent hours and hours repairing every lil flaw that happened and still failed, but i figured it could be just a learning piece so i could do the second one wich needed less work (1 strand) without messing it up.

the second tweeter started out bad tho, only one strand needed repair when i opened it, but when i was dabbing it with nailpolish remover on a q-tip, one of the strands split and snagged and pulled.... the next hour or so went the same way, then i just rippped the tape off fast and pulled a few rounds..

it sucks not having the speakers to listen to, but they arent needed right now. whats got me all bent out of shape is having to say i couldnt do it. :(

lol.

Well, hopefully we will soon have a source for new EMIT and EMIM diaphragms. Not sure if you know about the effort to get Graz Keet from Apogee Acoustics to make them for us, but several AK'ers have sent him examples of EMITs and EMIMs so that he can see what it will take to duplicate them. He seems to be very keen on doing it, so keep your fingers crossed. :D

go on ebay and buy a replacement

Lot easier to buy whole emit

yea, it would be easier, but theres still a big FAIL floating above these ones. :thumbsdn:

I wouldn't look at it as a failure, it wasn't in the cards. But I'm sure you learned plenty and that is never wasted time.
