Pre for my MC30s
What preamp was designed to go with the MC30? It has socket connections to power a preamp and was wondering if I should try to get a matching pre to go with my new MC30s. John

From Roger Russell's site; Octal socket powers McIntosh C-8, C-4, C104, or C-108 preamps.

I would suggest a stereo preamp. C20 through C1000 will all work.
Thanks, Ron-C |

Yeah stereo is where it's at. I will have to start selling or saving!

Yeah so far I have like 40 hours into one of them, give or take a day. So with parts and labor....never mind. David you really got me going!

But, seriously, I would vote for the C29 because I like the stepped-resistor volume control. One can always replace the opamps with new low-noise variety when the time comes. However, with tubes downstream, you'll likely not need to do so.

How about a nice MX110 with those 30's?
How about a C220 with those 30's? Steve Hoffman has a pair of 30's he runs with a Primaluna Prologue Three preamp...... Lots of choices....... |

I am liking the C26 and C29. I had a chance on a MX110, but passed...I am really out of my league cash wise. I need another basket case to restore. John

Check out the MX113-7 models. I got an MX114 as a trade and had Terry DeWick go through it and was very pleasantly amazed by what I heard. Have since upgraded to the MX117. You can get great deals on these. For some reason, folks turn up their nose at them, but they are wrong. They are based on the C26 and MR73/74 for the MX113-MX115 or C504/MR75 for the MX117. There is a nice write-up on the pre-MX117 models on Roger Russell's McIntosh page. He was the primary design engineer on them.

Yeah I could use a tube pre. My Nakamichi is very noisy. And by the way...cold dead fingers...
