Just wondering if the collective can put a model # to these old timers. They're Wharfedale Drivers, but there is no model number with them (or Wharfedale logo, for that matter). They date, I'm told, from 1958.
Any clues? I think, personally, that they are Wharfedale drivers in someone else's cabinets. The dials are "Presence" and "Treble".

No idea, but I now see where DBX got their cabinet design for the Soundfiled V.

They do look a very high quality home design and construction. Nice find. Big question is how do they sound?

those are very cool! vintage at it's finest. looks like both dbx and bose took some ideas from teh cabinet design (made smaller and crappier in the case of bose...)
I wonder what the high frequencies sound like? be ready to recap them...

which makes them ported 12" woofers with open baffle mid and tweet.
supposedly a pretty decent sounding high frequency, although I expect that's compared to warfs of the day which were..... um.... "dark". wooly? thick... some desription like that would fit. these W3s might be better. being open baffle highs they could be quite interesting! I wonder how accurately designed the woofer port is? they didn't have the math back then to do it ideally, so it was done by experimentation.

It was actually Wharfedales first attempt-according to Briggs himself- to reduce the size of the reflex box by using a long tube with 5cm diam.instead of the usual openings.
He also admitted that this couldn't beat the bass from the old big 'uns. 5" mid and 3" treble.30-20000Hz.15W.15ohms. 71,5x35,5x30,5cm. Oak or walnut. Last edited by Rolf Zetterberg; 11-03-2009 at 03:59 PM. |
