Dyna 10X5 Slightly Skewed Cantilever

One reason for choosing a used cart and trying to keep my cost down is because if I do happen to mess up (accidental death), at least its not financially catastrophic. :tears: Better to screw up a used cart than a brand new one, if that makes any sense? :dunno:

True, but you're still paying $250 plus shipping, it's still a lot o' dough to gamble on a used cart from a "not-so-amicable" seller...

I sure hope everything turns out A-OK for you, and that you can put this experience behind...

Yes Jeff (Subwolf), a tool like a lighted Loupe, lighted magnifier, and any other visual, and lighting aid will be a huge help with the MintLP Protractor. Did the seller include the 10X "lupe" with the MintLP Tractor? If not, you'll definitely need one, and as i mentioned, even a lighted Magnifier helps as well. It is very very hard getting close enough to the Stylus, even with a magnification aid, to see that the Stylus is thus perfectly positioned on the Protractor Arc, seeing the Stylus sit directly over the two very small null grid tic marks, and as well, just as hard to insure the Cantilever lines up with the two null grid's alignment lines.

I used every aid under the sun, including two lighted magnifiers, three Loupes, and to aid with lighting, I commisioned my Littlite 18" Gooseneck Lamp from it's use at the Table, (primarily used for nighttime spinning of vinyl), to be an aid with Protractor Alignment. The Littlite is a great tool to have, I love mine, and without good lighting, all the magnifiers-loupes in the world will be of little help. The beauty of the Littlite, was I could set that puppy virtually right next to the Cartridge, wherever it's positioned, it stays put. Proper lighting to do such tasks with a Stylus is something that will test the patience of a Monk.

The "really hard" cartridge to align is the one you eventually would like having, the Dynavector Karat 17D3. With it's much shorter Cantilever, which is literally buried under the body, one needs to be a "nanite" to do an alignment with this Cartridge! I'm sure the Karat is an absolute nightmare to properly align! Mark

Life is a gamble but I know what you're saying. I do have recourse though if the cart is not in the condition he states. Paid via paypal with a credit card so if I need to I can take the appropriate steps to recoup my money. Thanks Skylounger, for wishing me well. I appreciate that.

By the way, I did notice in another thread that were thinking of getting a 10X5 and that you currently were using an AT-150MLX. Care to describe your thoughts on these two carts since those are the two I had it down to as well?

When I then bought the ZYX Airy 3X Cartridge, not long after the acquisition of the benz Ruby, the Benz Ruby 3 came off the VPI Table, with only 15.6 hours of use, and that was right around that time, I then ordered the MintLP Protractor from Yip in Hong Kong.

As others had found, the alignment process for me took 1 hour, and 45 minutes. I of course took a 10 minute break a couple times, to refocus the ole eyeballs, regain composure, get a second wind, and push on. Those efforts were well rewarded. Once one does an alignment with the MintLP, there's little doubt in one's mind, that you haven't achieved the finest alignment possible.

When the time comes, make sure you thoroughly read the instructions that come with the MintLP Tractor. Then read them again, and again! They are well written, even though english is probably not Yip's first language. Mark

Well, I never got the 10X5, but I do like the 150MLX very much. It's mounted on my Systemdek IIX and I use it, primarily, to play the (800 or so) M and NM classical LPs I bought from an avid collector's widow. In short, for critical listening. Otherwise, I have 4 other TTs that I use alternatively and I have a variety of carts (AT440MLa X 2, Nagaoka MP-110, Shure M97xE, OM10 + Super, AT11 w/ATS12S).

I guess I just wasn't ready to jump into the MC game, but eventually I might go there.

Keep us posted on how you like it!

Hey Peter, how are you liking your Scout? I still don't have mine up and running and hopefully will this weekend with the Dyna 10X5. You think it was a good move buying the used cart if its in excellent condition like the seller states?

Hi Subwolfer! Yes, I am loving my Scout!

When I dealing with my sales guy, I told him I was thinking of getting the Scout and a Clear Audio Maestro cart (retails $1000). He told me to get the 10X5 (retails $430) because for our TTs, Dynavectors have better synergy and "I want to save you money while getting you something better." I said OK, but I have the $1K budget for the Maestro and he said "I wouldn't get it". So I ordered it and the next morning I called and asked if it was too late for him to mount the Karat 17D3 - and that's what I got.

This setup, (and even if I had the 10x5, I truly believe), sounds better than my Jolida JD100 tube CDP.

I would have gotten the 10x5 and would have been happy with it, but I just wanted to max out my budget now so I wouldn't have to loose due to depreciation later when I upgraded. Buying used was a good choice on your part. I was open to buying 2nd hand (I have a couple of sets of speakers that way) but I'd rather buy where I can see/listen to it in person 1st. And nothing I wanted was available in my are 2nd hand. If I was upgrading a system that already worked fine, then yeah, i would have waited for something to come along 2nd hand.

And I'm a lot like you, I will ask and ask and ASK away till I'm 100% confident in my purchase. That guy was rude no matter what - you, the Customer, are handing him over cash. Whatever happened to "the customer is always right"?? Instead of being rude, he should have written his last email like:

"I understand your concern, which is why the cart is packaged well and ... am insuring it for full value in case of shipping damage. I've done everything in my powers for our transaction to have a positive outcome that will make us both happy campers! :) Let me know when it arrives. You're gonna love it!"

I agree, what a jackass this guy is. How does he not have the minute or two it takes to respond to your simple questions? You're spending a lot of money, it's not like he's doing you a favor or something. I'm sorry you drew a bad card with this guy, I've never dealt with anyone like that on Audiogon.

The 10X5 is a great cartridge, I'm sure you'll really enjoy it.

I bought a used cart on Audiogon and I was nervous until it arrived safely and performed flawlessly.

You pay your money and take your chances.

I hope it turns out for you as it did me.

Well I was right when I said perhaps he was just having a bad day. He sent me a message to tell me it shipped and explained his rudeness:

Jeff,

I shipped first class. It was the same length of time as priority. I insured
for the full amount. It wound up costing only 1.60 more. Don't worry about
it.

I hope it all works out. You should like this cart.
I had a heck of day, so that is why I was a little testy.
Let me know when you get it and we will do the feedback on audiogon.

Matt

Thing is, I paid for Priority Mail shipping but if it takes the same amount of time I guess it's the same difference. I just hope it arrives safely and is in excellent condition like he states.

Or maybe he read this thread??? ;)

No, you're probably right... Once again, important thing is you get a great cart!

I have randomly followed this thread over time and I have a few questions.
In case anyone does not know, I am the guy who sold Subwolfer the VPI, clamp, Dynavector, etc.

When you buy something that is clearly listed as used, do you expect it to look brand new? I expect there to be light scratches, etc, unless I am buying something new.

If something is used, listed as 2 years old and in excellent condition, but not "like new", what condition do you expect the item to arrive in? Does excellent mean like new to you?

How much follow up/follow thru (during the sale or post sale) do you expect the seller to provide? I personally haven't had to contact a seller, post sale, unless the item was defective.

Would you buy something used that you had never seen new? I ask because if you did how would you know if what you are buying is damaged or just looks differently than what you had envisioned?

I ask these questions in all sincerity. In some small way, my reputation/integrity has been called into question as a result of this/these sale(s). If I have done something out of line, I need to know so it doesn't happen again. I have a 100% feedback on ebay with almost 300 total transactions since '01 or '02 the majority of which are purchases I made. I am not a power seller in any sense of the word. I sell only items which I had owned.
Again, I am asking sincerely so that I can completely take care of my end of the deal on the next sale I make.
Thanks in advance.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Dyna 10X5 you sold SW was the one he returned and that you refunded, right?

If so, and providing I'm reading correctly, this thread is about a second Dyna 10X5 listed on A'Gon.

Yes, that is correct.

Hello KMulkey, as Skylounger has mentioned, this thread was not about your dealings with the original poster. I had privately assured the buyer of your table, that he had gotten essentially a steal, at the price you sold the table to him for, and he understands this.

When it was said "stick the Cartridge where the sun didn't shine", this was of course NOT referring to you, and as far as I can see, you've been an upstanding person to deal with, and you had amicably stuck with the buyer of your equipment all the way, until he was 100% satisfied with his purchase. So, with that being said, I think you are to be commended as a good person to deal with. Mark

There's a slight misunderstanding here.

First of all, I've initiated several other threads regarding the VPI Scout I purchased and the Dynavector 10X5 cartridge I purchased. So when you say you've been randomly following this thread, this is not the thread that you're mentioned in, and thus the confusion.

Second of all, I don't recall anyone tarnishing your reputation/integrity in those other threads. If so, please provide specific examples to which your reputation/integrity was brought into question.

However, just so you all know, I did receive a partial refund because of some minor issues. And as Mark points out, I ended up getting a killer deal and am quite happy with the outcome. We're all good now. and I have no regrets purchasing the table from K.

OK, last post on this thread...I promise. You're right, I should have mentioned the other thread and probably posted there...my mistake.
I did not mean to intimate that you, Sub, had said anything derogatory. It was more some of the remarks from others that referred to bad dealings on ebay, and suggesting that I had hidden known defects, etc. I am aware there are those on ebay who might rip people off. I'm just not one of them...at least that is always my intent. The reality is I may have to unload gear again, on ebay or elsewhere, and I don't want anyone wondering if I will deal with them honestly. I am outta here...thanks.

Again Mr K, I think you were honest in your dealing with SubWolf, and you both concluded a trasaction that was agreeable to both parties. My hat's off to you.

We are all only fellow audiophiles trying to help one another out, whether that person is buying, or selling.

While I know it is against Akarma policies to openly wave your wares outside the classifieds section, feel free to drop me a PM line if you have other gear to sell, maybe we can help each other? Let's try to all help one another, in a friendly community. Mark
