Bozak Concert Grands vs. Wharfedale W90's

I heard Susurus' pair of Bozaks and IMHO they were horrible (sorry man). Dark, thick, not well defined. I really did not like them at all which was disappointing. They were not setup well, on cinder blocks and driven funny. His DQ30 were my favorite in that room.

I own W90's, they got me into vintage and i bought them not knowing anything about them. Lots of speakers have come and gone but these are still here. I love them. the bass is excellent and real. The mids are very nice and the top end is also excellent but limited range. A very inviting a smooth jazz speaker. Attached to my low watt Fisher amp they are wonderful and WARM. For what they do they do it well. Imaging kinda sucks a little.

Yes, the DQ-20i's are great speakers (and that's with Peerless 25mm tweeters substituted for the orig (expensive) 19mm ScanSpeaks). Yes I've moved the big Bozaks into the bedroom, where they work like nearfield since the room's small. They sound great in mono, some comb filtering in stereo. I've not seen DQ-30's yet.

Up against the wall may be a better position than I had them in the middle of the room up on blocks, that was the best placement for Maggies in that room but that doesn't mean the Bozaks should have been placed there. Possibly more to the point, my Fisher RS-1080 sounds on the dark side with everything, not just those.

My dad has been running Bozak Concert Grands since he purchased them new in '67 and they have some freaking amazing bass and mid response. My memory of the highs is that they're a bit rolled off but no big deal! Listening to music on these speakers is primarily an emotional experience for me. The sound hits you in the chest and vibrates your whole body. These speakers literally ROCK the house.

Sad thing is my dad usually just listens to stuff on his little Sony boombox while he tinkers.:tears:

But, think on the positive side. He still has them and that means with luck one day he will give you a gift :).

Thanks for the kind thoughts. Hopefully things work out for your stepfather too.

Thanks.

I think if I was going to hunt down a pair of vintage Bozaks (and I will), I would probably go fo the Synphonies or perhaps even something smaller. I could never fit a pair of Concert Grands into my current place (I don't think I could fit the Symphonies right now either, but if the price was right enough, I'd make room one way or another).

Who knows? You may end up a happier person with one of the smaller Bozak models than you would if you got the CG's.

One thing about the 2nd and 3rd harmonics of low bass notes. At 40Hz my Symphonies sound fine, but because they don't kick you with distorted 80 and 120Hz junk most people are used to that never was in the original source, they can think it's weak in the bass. Same with my NS-1000M's, even less distortion in the bass. No bloat, all music.

But you need an amp with enough current to push low notes with authority...not usually cheap.

The Audiophile review of the Velodyne ULD-18 servo sub talks about this impression too. (there we're talking 17Hz at +-3dB, only VMPS or IRS-V goes there? )

There's a set of very early 1964 Wharfedale W-90s listed on Ebay for 399.00 with local pickup in Indiana I believe? The serial #s are very low, and they look to be in very fine condition.

I saw that pair. The cabs looked nice. There was another pair in CA, but I think they had missing drivers. Smoothest speakers I've ever heard though. Incredibly-musical and engaging.

Never heard the Bozak cg's I have owned w70 3 ways and lots of other stuff the w70's were pretty good except the high extension was lacking a bit I can imagine that the CG's would be good with classical or Jazz something I would like to hear someday .

regards

Well for myself I have heard CG's and Symphonys and they were awesome in each their own right but lately I was lucky enough to pick up an original set of 1962 W90's Wharfdales Tabltops and let me tell you I am impressed! I have replace my Bozaks LS's and JBL's with the 90's and would not ever go back now.The W90's were and are the TOTL for Wharfdale bar none and they look and play accordingly.I power or overpower them with a warm sounding Marantz 2385 with Pioneer Add-ons and yes I don't use much power but it really makes the 90's sing as those Alnicos really sound great:)

From my experiences with the W70, W70D, Bozak 302, 305, Symphony and CG: The W70 ties with the 302s. Neither betters the other really in any way with a synergetic amp pushing each. The W70 is competitive with the W70 as the Symphony uses the same compoents of the 302 but more 11 vs 4. But falls quite short overall, the Symphony simply os overpowering. Not heard the the W90 but based on the experence with these that I have, I expect it may fall between the 302 and 305 overall. The component count of the W90 comes close to the 305.

The 305 is rarer than the 302, Symphony or CG. Possibly b/c the others could be bought not fully populated and over time populated and the 305 was offered only in a ow boy configuration and hence takes up a lot of floor space. Today 305 owners tend to tip them on their side and mirror image them. Some Symphony and CG owner also tend to disconnect all but 2 tweeter turning them into a 305 with extended bass. The bass of the Symphony and CG goes down deeper than almost any other speaker that is not using a sub and the low end of the 305 gets down there also, just a bit more rolled off.
