Wireless Networking Libraries??
I'm thinking about using my net book with a USB DAC to play my iTunes library through my main rig. I could leave the netbook by the gear and access it just like changing a normal source. I could run it from my desktop, but that means longer cable runs and the wire mess.
Talking to djnagle tonight about it, he wondered if the wireless transmission would compromise both speed and compress the music, but since this is data and digital, does it have any effect before the DAC??? Any thoughts? Is this a valid concern?

I stream music over wifi all the time. My Wireless-G network operates at up to 54Mbps, while the music streams operate at a max of 320Kbps - plenty of overhead, never have a problem. The devices I use (OmniFi DMS-1's) have a built-in buffer to help prevent drop-outs, in case you're downloading images or some other bandwidth-intensive activity at the same time you're streaming music. I'm pretty sure any music player software you might use will also buffer the stream.

Lossless files won't compress mych anyway, even 801.11b is fast enough to stream flac unless you've got other traffic on the network.

I can stream FLAC to 3 Squeezebox Duets simultaneously without a hitch. Go for it.

Thanks guys!! I tried it last night and it seems to work just fine.
The music sounded like crap, but I was running it off the headphone out, so that's to be expected.

im a bit late to this party...but i want to enter my two cents. wireless is fine for file sharing. the problem seems to be whats serving files. ive got around 170 gigs of music on a networked computer. originally the machine ran windows xp with a wireless connection..this didnt work. it files would stop working at random. i switched the server to a wired connection which only moderately helped. it wasnt till i ditched xp and went with samba on a linux machine that it worked like its supposed to...mind you this was with wireed as i was troubleshooting server before attempting wireless client. with my laptop running wireless g...it works great. i get around 20mbps with my wifi...more than enough for even a dvd..flac generally stays under a mbit and only goes to 3 with 94/24 content on avg.
