"Dr. Dre's Monster Beats" headphones - Anyone ever actually try these?
I usually run in the other direction when I hear the words "noise-cancelling technology", but I can't help but be intrigued by these things. They have an interesting look at least. But does anyone know how they sound?

I'll stick with my ATs, thanks. Great sound quality and wonderful for mowing the yard or air travel.

I own the bose and the beats.
I bought my bose headphones first. The noise cancelling worked great on the plane. Sound was really good. Tried the beats over at Best buy. I loved them. Have used them on the plane also. They sound fantastic. (I would not call them vegas...) So I bought a pair off amazon used. About $100 cheaper than best buy. The wife has the bose now. I'm not a "gimmick" person...I bought them because after I test drove them at Best Buy, nothing else I had heard could come close. I will say though, that I have little experience with high end headphones. It just felt like I had a pair of my favorite speakers attached to my head! I'm keeping them.

I like headphones with great bass response, yes. However, I don't want "extra-bassy" headphones - I prefer a full-bodied, warm, lively (but not "in-your-face"), fully-balanced headphone sound.
They're probably not for me (especially since I really can't afford to spend $300 on a pair of headphones anyway), but I still can't help but be curious. SOMEONE out there must have tried these. They look good at least. I'm surprised they don't have a big pot leaf emblazoned on the side. "Deez headphones is da' bomb!! Dis' is da' shiznit, y'all!!" Ahh, what does it matter? I listen to "The Chronic" (the original disc - NOT the remaster) through my speakers anyway.

No, the Br. Beats have loud, loose, crappy bass response.
I did an A/B comparison with my Sony MDR-V6's, and I was appalled....I paid like $80 shipped for my Sonys....a girl at my school won hers in a contest. Listened to a buncha music, and the Beats were just crappy sounding...not just booseted bass, but rolled off muddy highs.

I had them plugged into a PreSonus Inspire 1394 streaming 24/96 unprocessed master files of very different types of music. I switched over to Pandora for Modeselektor, Cascada, Arminn Van Buren and other fun material, and hands down I preferred my Sonys every single time....I equated the sound with a very bassy mid seventies all in one system....they sounded a bit like how people describe the normal thrusters, just with boosted flabby bass...also, I would not be caught dead wearing those.....Much prefer the Sonys for comfort, too.

Lots of money for an average headphone at best. IMHO

Oh, come on, those look good considering how they COULD have looked (Think "gold"). I mean, some people look at those Beyerdynamic 770's (I think the # is DT-770 or DH-770 - something like that) and say they look ugly (I'm still on the fence about those, but I hear they sound great - Great headphones for people who like the bass and drums). I personally want a pair of Grados (or Allessandro - I'm not picky -I know Grado makes the Allessandro phones).
Incidentally, if someone is looking for a crazy-good deal on a decent set of studio headphones, then check these out. Carvin slaps their name on them and sells them for $49.95 - and at THAT price they're a great deal for someone who needs a set of good headphones cheap. HOWEVER, They are also sold under the Samson for $19.95, and at THAT price, they're an absolute steal, IMO. These are studio headphones, NOT a pair that you would use with an Ipod or a Discman (They 64ohm, I think, so you won't get optimum performance out of them through an mp3 player or a CD player). These are really for either home use through a good-size receiver or headphone amp (A headphone amp would be great for these), plus, they're also great for those home-studio workstation units made by Boss, Tascam, Fostex, and Korg, among others. These are great for a musician who wants a cheap pair to balance between studio and home use. They're not cutting-edge or anything, but they sound good and the ear cushions are very, very-comfortable, IMO. I have never seen a better pair of headphones for anywhere near that price. You can't miss with them for $20.00. I'd get another pair, but my money's all tied-up at the moment. I paid $50 for my original pair. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produc...eadphones.html

The fact that they are endorsed by Dr. Dre, much less that he has ANY affiliation with these suggests to me that they are intended for the eMpTV crowd, priced waaay too high, are made for DJing, and have nothing to do with high quality sound. Of course I may be wrong. eMpTV did put out music at one point.

I don't really go for the whole 'hip' look.....if they were "gold" then I would think that a lot more people that like "bling" would be buying them....
Personally, I wear Sony MDR-V6's to school every day.

I think they are better than any set of BOSE headphones that I've heard (not that that is saying anything). They would be awesome for $50.
Personally, I like my Grado SR-225s. Don't really need the boomy bass for bluegrass and acoustic music (which is a lot of what I listen to). If I wanted some bass heavy phones I'd go with the Beyerdynamic DT-770 80-ohm (older version) or the later DT-990s. Supposedly the new line of Shure headphones have some really nice bass. |
