Damn Headphone Forum...

Geebers Carl, Grado RS-2is!!!! I had a set of 125's for years and they brought me much joy, got me close enough to smell Bonnie Raitt's chapstick.

Damn headphone forum is right! Just in the last month, I purchased the AKG 702s, a Little Dot MKIII, I got a pair of used Sennheiser 580s due to arrive today, a Peachtree Decco integrated amp with USB DAC due to arrive on Tuesday, a Carat Emerald DAC (that'll be returned). Now I want a Woo Audio 6. So....
A. I'm screwed as Fedex will come around 2PM and wifey-poo decided to stay home today.
B. "What are all these boxes for??"
C. I hope she's not home when the Decco arrives.
D. I best sell some other stuff real soon.
E. Just shoot me now.

Edited to add:
Problem "A" didn't happen as Fedex came early and wifey-poo was in the shower. Yes!

LOL!!! That's me as well :D

lol!

And currently drooling over some used Kimber Kable Silver Streak interconnects. Even used they would cost more than my headphone amp. But they look so cool!

Damn Headphone Forum.

If the price is right go for it. Those are expensive but actually very good interconnects, I used to have two pair. I recently sold them because I now design and make my own IC's, but it wasn't easy to let them go. Anyway, I let both my one meter pairs go for about $170 per pair including shipping on A-gon. Just in case you're wondering if the price is right.

I have a Zebra power cable too, that was a good investment. Despite the controversy (which seems to be on the track to fizzling out), power cords can make a significant improvement and IMO are always worth upgrading. Zebra Cable makes relatively inexpensive ones that are a good way to try out a performance-oriented power cord.

shhh... I got them for cheap! :D

And as for the Kimber Kables, I'm thinking about getting an used one meter pair, cutting them in half and getting matching WBT connectors. Those WBT connectors are pricey too, but I found a place that has them for considerably less. So I'll have two pairs of .5 meter Silver Streaks for about half the cost.

Damn Headphone Forum Alright!

Discovered AK mid last year and have been going down the upgrade path ever since. I was a little stingy at first, but along came a Thorens TD 160 for $220 - kapow!

Of course I need a decent cartridge to go with the Thorens so AT 440MLa $198 - kapow!

Then to make sure alignment and stuff was right, a TurntableBasics protractor and digital stylus pressure gauge $45 and $100.

Hmm...probably need to upgrade from the Kenwood receiver, hence Sansui AU 555 $140 - kapow! Also find some nice Sansui SP1200s for the kitchen $15 a steal!

Denon DL 160 $160, Shure V15II $150. Need a TP60 headshell kit $40.

Need something better than a 10x jewellers loop to look at stylii....binocular microscope $200 - kapow!

Then damn headphone forum. Last night Sennheiser HD 580s $250 - kapow! and the most money I've spent on anything so far.

When is it all going to end?

These are my first real quality phones so I can't compare them with other brands. Now my issue is convincing myself that an investment in a good headphone amp is not 'required'. Have used a Sansui C-2101 preamp and am now driving the phones with a Kenwood Basic C2 preamp. Sounds good to me so far.

I've been very satisfied with my Practical Devices XM-5 headphone amp. Not the most expensive at about $250, and they offer a 30 day trial period.

It's made with DIP sockets, so you can try many different op-amps in it.
Not sure of the impedance of your Denons , but an e-mail to PD will get a recommendation of what to use.

There's also a XM-5 forum on Head-Fi where the audio effects of different op-amps are discussed.

Analogman, let me know if you want to get rid of the LD MKIII once you get your Woo Audio 6

I've solved my "too many boxes" problem by using my work-provided UPS Store account. So I just need to make sure I get my toy from the garage to the house undetected.

Happy listening :music: ,

Decided I wanted some good headphone sound a while ago. After looking around on ebay and headfi, I ended up building a Millet Starving Student amp for about $80 and then picked up a pair of Audio Technica ATH-A900s from a friend for $120. I can't imagine getting better sound for $200.

The kicker is that I can't use them. They don't fit my ears quite right and after 10 minutes it feels like someone punched me in the head. So, the whole rig's on loan to my brother.
