I'd say that's pretty close...

I used to work for a McIntosh dealer in the late 70's, early 80's. The local McIntosh rep ( I can't remember his name Dick something?) said at the CES show, they showed the MC2300, fed it with 60Hz and ran a washing machine with it.

I wish I had seen that.

Back when disco hit in the mid-70s, hardiness and reliability of the amplifier was a big issue to sell to bar owners. If the disco system stopped, the beer-buyers walked out - a simple business model.

To prove the point, I would connect an electric drill to the output of amps like Mac and Crown using a 60hz signal generator as input. Then I would let the bar owner drill as many holes in 2x4s as they wanted.

When I demoed a similar-powered Monster Pioneer or Marantz receiver or amp, the speaker relays would start kicking in and the amp would quit.

I usually got the business......and it did make for 'useless party trivia'-type stories for the owner, too.

Cheers,

David

I heard that Rowland (or a dealer) used to do some welding with the Model 5 ... or maybe it was Krell? Seems like a similar 'demonstration'.

I am currently trying to repair a MAC1900 that I got real cheap at an estate sale. It only worked out of one channel. I am using it as a learning tool to repair SS receivers. I have gained a lot of knowledge doing it but still am having problems getting it to function properly. Some would say find a different receiver to use for my purpose.

I will prevail!

I'd heard the same thing from a salesman at a high end audio shop once. Cool to hear the story get backed up. Got the impression they were large monoblocks.

I'll add this -

One of my old EE professors back in college used a MC30 as a doorstop in his office. At the time, I didn't really know what it was. When I inquired about it a few years later he said he had sold it.

In the spirit of helping you to get to a Mcintosh, I can give you a free tube preamp, an AMC 1030S (S for socket to replace tubes), with a new set of good branded tube I never installed.

It's a good preamp for its class, and a good start I think. I attached some pics.

What do you think?

Brice.
Thank you very much for your offer. I really appreciate it. Unfortunately I'm going to have to decline your offer. I have no clue as to when (if ever) I'll be getting those amps, so I'd rather your preamp be used by someone as opposed to sitting in storage in my closet, waiting for the day to me to bring it out.

Sure, np.

I started with a MC240 11 years ago and was very happy with it... Until I could afford new gears. I think it's a good amp to start, and very affordable.

I worked for CBS Records and Tapes in the late 70s early 80s. They used a lot of McIntosh amps for QA/QC listening. The most ridiculous use I saw for McIntosh is they used them to drive their pant PA system. Dozens of MC40s mounted high on shelved wired to several ceiling speakers per location. When the plant moved to Carrollton Ga in 81' much of the McIntosh gear "got lost" in the transfer. Wish they would have lost them over my way. Some of the lost gear included MC2115s and MC5150s.
