With me it was my parents car a 1978 Ford LTD that got me into audio, my parents themselves were not very inspirational in getting me into music, the only and i mean thee only musician my parents listened to was John Denver, and our home stereo was a Panasonic all in one unit with the turntable built in and 8 track player and some cheap speakers, and when i say cheap speakers i mean reeaally cheap speakers! panasonic thrusters would have been a major upgrade LOL.
both my parents were teachers so they had the summer off and when myself and brothers and sister were in our teens my mom started planning these month long summer vacations usually to Colorado (i live in Ohio) so you can imagine how long the trip was, and the whole way out and back we had our choice of music...as long as it was one of John Denvers 8 tracs of which we had everyone he ever made "arrrrg!" the one cool thing though we had for those long trips and was probably responsible for starting my car audio fascination, was in 1978 my parents bought there 1st new car which was a 4 door ford LTD, and they had the ford dealership upgrade the stock radio to a AM FM with 8 track, i remember one of the cool functions it had was a mechanical station search on it, and mind you this wasnt digital it was standard face, you hit the search button and watched the needle track to the next station, very high tech at the time, also my older brother had sold his car and had taken out a relatively new set of clarion four way deck speakers and clarion 100 watt EQ, the dealership installed these for my parents as well as a set of upgrade front door speakers, they said at the time we were the first customer they had ever done something like this for, mind you this was in 1978 and upgrading car audio in a new vehicle was still relatively new and a dealer doing it was pretty much unheard of, i remember being very proud of it as a kid, and when we would take those month long trips we usually at some point would stop at most our relatives on the way out or back, and i remember showing it off to all our relatives and being proud of their reaction to a system in a new car and how it sounded, later when i turned 16 i got a summer job and my 1st car and i installed my first system of my own, after hearing my system all my buddies and soon others wanted a system installed in their trucks or cars and before i knew it i was the go to install guy in my neighborhood, i installed petty much all my buddies car stereos including some for their parents, and then for people i didn't really know who heard about me from friends.
my home audio fascination came some time later after i got married and my father in-law gave me two pair of large advent speakers, and later a set of mcintosh ml-1c speakers, of which i still have all three pairs today, those advents got me hooked on home audio, i had to re-foam the surrounds before i could use them, then i went out and found a 2250 marrantz receiver which i powered them with till the power relay started going out of it, i still have it as well and am waiting to save some money back to have it gone over and repaired so i can hook it back up to the advents.
well that's how i got into the audio obsession which has present day turned one end of my basement/mancave into a wall of vintage and newer speakers, receivers and amps in a never ending obsession to constantly tweak, add and upgrade my audio equipment in that never ending quest for audio nirvana (god i need help) i wonder if there is a support group for this!?!? and after dragging home them monster Kenwood LS-P9400 last Monday when i already have god knows how many other pairs of speakers, i am sure my family is planning an intervention for me soon!! thank god i have Audiokarma were myself and and all you fellow Audioaholics can hangout and i don't have to feel alone with my obsession.
peace and may the obsession be with you!!
