That was part of the reason why the format died so quickly. I think several companies did make blank cartridges, and there were also empty cartridges that you could load with your choice of 1/4" tape.

My impression is that the Compact casette, and the backup on this thing from all major producers could be the thing that made the last nail for the box in which RCA-casettes was put to rest....
