TC-580 brake Job

Hello,
I finally figured out how to access the the innards of the 580 thanks to a kind gentleman on AK today. I located the brake shoes with the felt on them and now I am sitting here trying to figure out why the shoes do not apply enough pressure on the hubs to stop them. I am trying to assess the trouble and am not sure where I am going with it. Is there an adjustment, are the shoes worn out, or does the unit just need cleaning up and lubrication? I was wondering if someone can point me in the proper direction please. The overall condition of the unit is it looks like new inside and out.
regards,
Joe

There are three possible problems.
1) The brake-shoes may have worn-out
2) The Braking solenoid may not be working, or may not be able to make its full motion.
3) The connecting mechanism between the breaks and the solenoid might be sticking, or it might be completely frozen.

Hi Goldear,
I will work on isolating the various functions and see if I can decide which one is causing the problem. At present I am hoping that lacking full range of motion
is the culpurt,
Thanks,
Joe

maybe this can help you along ?? - brake jobs can real PITA - but understanding how they work, would normally give hints......

most decks with solenoid activated brakes, usually uses the soleniod to release the brake, hence when deck is in stop mode, or without power, the brakes are "on"

normally the brakeforce is different - meaning you shuld be able to fell a rather good difference when turning the reel base one way, versus the opposite way ....

for the left side brake: turning clockwise light brake, counterclockwise: more brakeforce

right side usually works opposite

most common error on brakes are worn out brakebands (felt strip worn down)
linkage problems, weak return springs, or dirt in the solenoid preventing it from working correct

can you show a pic of the deck with removed front ?

Hello Jan,
Thank You for the information and I will be sending some photos shortly. If you need more please let me know.

if you can attach some pictures on the brake assembly, we can try to take it from there...

can't remember if i ever had my hands in a 580, but let us give it a try :)

looking at the last picture - it look's like the felt on the brakeshoes has turned black, well i just called it felt, not sure it that at all, but i really think it's a part of the problem. in my naive language the material is called "kork" - this moment i'm clueless for the english name.

in the first picture you can see the entire mech - do check all is moving rather freely, that grease can be gummy and prevent proper operation

My TC-651 has the same brakes. I removed the brakes, peeled off the pad material, and replaced with green felt I got from Home Depot. The brake shoes are held on with a little c clip. The felt comes in a 4" by 6" sheet and has adhesive on one side. Just cut to the size of the old pad and put it on the brake shoe. The felt sheets are designed to be put on the bottom of lamps and such. I found this solution on another post and it worked for me.

Hello Jan,
I believe that we also call it kork, but with a C, Cork. The material that is on the Sony looks like Felt the same material that covers Billiard tables. I will do as you suggest and clean all the pivot points to make sure that they are not gummed up and I will replace the felt on the brake shoes and see if that solves my problems.
Thank You,

seems we agree on the material :) - if there are grease on any linkages in the brake system, make sure it isn't sticky, a bit of luck, and you're running.
