Kappa 8

Danimal

Just a man...
Will my Yamaha M-4 drive the Kappa 8? If I acquire these I do plan on getting another M-4 for biamping. I have heard that the imp fluctuates quite a bit and can be rough on amps. Is my Yamaha capable of driving these speakers without damage?

Thanks!

Depends on how many watts per channel it has and whether it is a high current amp capable of driving low impedence loads.

the 8's are much easier to drive than the 9's - that being said the 8 do present a low ohm load to and amp (which version are they , 8's or 8a's) the 8a's had a friendlier crossover - I never had a problem diving mine (usually a 200 watt amp) but I never really cranked them either....

As stated in my original post I would be pushing these with the Yamaha M4. 100 watts @ 8 ohms. Guess I'll have to find the specs to see if it is stable at lower ohms.

Thanks guys.

I just found a post over at Lansing Hertage that some one claims this amp is 120w @ 8ohms and 170w @ 4 ohms. Does that sound right? I was always under the impression that the M4 was 100 watts. Looks like I need to start a new thread....

Nope...not big enough unless you like to listen at low to fair sound levels. I would go wit a bigger amp. I use a spec 2 and I plan on mooving up to two Spec 2 amps BI amp soon.

Thanks. I will move on. The guy wont hold them for me for a couple weeks until I scrape up the cash anyway.

Kappa 8 amp

I just got and refurbished a pair of 8 Kappas, and have them hooked up with a Sansui AU-G90X, about 130 WPC. This amp sounds just great and drives the speakers pretty well and is good for 4 ohms. However you guys have scared me, I have read that 130 watts will probably blow the tweeters if driven hard and I have been scared to switch the woofers to "extended", because of the review saying they hit 1.3 ohms at 40 hz. Anybody feel I am OK with this great amp ?

not ok. even in "normal" it is pretty dangerous for any sansui integrated.

No, unless you never turn the volume up past background level. The Sansui may be rated for a 4 ohm load, but the K8's drop down to around 2 ohms at times, which will cause the 'sui to overdrive and clip. EMIT tweeters do NOT like clipping.

You need an amplifier capable of handling a 2 ohm load that is of high-current design. A big wpc number does not necessarily mean high current. High-current amps are usually large and heavy, frequently run hot, and can be quite expensive. But there are many good, reasonably-priced options, especially if you go used.

And do NOT switch the woofers into extended mode while driven by the Sansui. Nope, don't even think about it.

Sansui G90X

It claims stable into 2 ohms, and has a rating of 200 watts "clipping power" into 2 ohms and 360 watts dynamic power into 2 ohms. This is not your 70's Sansui, but the speakers do go down to 1.3 ohms according to a Stereo Review review

amp for Kappa 8's

You were right, any kind of pressing the volume causes the protection circuits to shut it down. I have loved this combination ever since I bought and restored the 8's but I finally had the chance to let it loose. Funny because the amp is rated in the Sansui literature into 2 ohms dynamic power. I I bought an Acurus A250 and this makes a huge difference. Using it with an NAD 712 receiver (the Sansui has no pre-outs) and this sounds so different, actually less coloration in the speakers and they don't "scream" as much when pressed. A nice, open sound even at high volumes. I am surprised, I have loved this Sansui with the 6 Kappas (and any other speaker I have hooked up to them).

Not surprising at all. The Kappa 6's are MUCH easier to drive.

Glad you got an amp that will make those 8's really sing :music:. Acurus made some very good gear .
